The Year Behind. The Year Ahead.

Looking back on a great year of writing

Welcome to 2016! Can’t wait for all the new year has in store.

I don’t know about you guys, but 2015 was a crazy year for me! There were a ton of personal milestones for me: I became a new father of adorable twin boys, celebrated my 5-year wedding anniversary with my lovely wife Sarah (aka Jade), and ran another half-marathon, to name just a few. And let’s be honest, any year that ends with a new freaking Star Wars movie is a good one! (4.6 stars. Love the movie to death!).

What I Wrote in 2015, and what I plan to Write in 2016…

Last year broke a 4-year run, making it the first year since I became an author that I didn’t publish anything in a calendar year. That does not mean, however, that I didn’t write anything. In fact, 2015 may have been my most prolific writing year ever! To sum up my year-of-writing in one word: Exploration. After finishing Earthly Trinity last December I found myself, for the first time in years, with the freedom to write whatever. There are literally dozens of documents on my computer with story ideas and outlines from over the years, but I’ve had too many other commitments to pursue any of them them. So pursue them I did! Here’s a quick breakdown of what I was up to this year, and a look ahead of what to expect in 2016 :

  1. Lost City Chronicles – Ultimate Edition (plus new novella Return to a Lost City)

Returning to a world and characters I love. Check out my more detailed post about this here. Expected Release: May, 2016

Trilogy Cover

  1. The Painter’s Portal (The Gallowood Files, Book 1)

A fun story idea I’ve had for years (since my time writing the first draft of Legend of the Book Keeper). This was my first post-Lost City Chronicles writing project. Annnd…it’s finished! I knocked the first draft out in about 3 months and have been sitting on a finished manuscript all year. Not only is it finished, but it’s also fully illustrated, edited, and proofed….BUT WAIT! There’s more! Not only is it finished and illustrated… I’ve even written the first part of its sequel! (as I said, I’ve been busy!). Its a fun, haunted-house thriller/mystery.  Expected Release: 2016.

  1. Heroes Reborn (Elemental Champions, Book 1)

Pure. Epic. Fantasy. My favorite genre to read, and my first attempt to write it. Gosh…this book is a BEAST! It’s without a doubt the most expansive and ambitious story I’ve ever tried to tell. In terms of scope, it makes The Lost City Chronicles look like a nursery-rhyme in comparison. I’ve already completed nearly 80,000 words, but have another 60,000-65,000 or so more to go. Due to its size and scope, I anticipate the editing and revision process to be an utter gauntlet. This book is my top priority for 2016, so wish me luck! Expected Release: 2017

  1. Name: 316 (*working title*)

A change of pace. Sometimes even I need a break from dragons, knights, and epic battles (okay, only a short break). This book started as a curiosity for me. It’s a fiction story set in the early years of Alcatraz prison, where a guard and an inmate, with an uncanny resemblance to each other, arrive at “The Rock” on the same boat. The story explores their relationship and raises questions about sin, the human condition, and redemption. It’s a very different feel and tone than anything else I’ve written so far. I have around 8,000 words written so far, with a goal of ending in the 30,000-40,000 range. Expected Release: 2017-2018

  1. Honor Code of the Assassin

Another story idea I’ve been sitting on for years. I love the concept, but for now this guy has been relegated to the back-burner. I’ve completed a rough outline and the first several chapters and anticipate it being a quick write whenever I dive in. A fun YA fantasy/adventure story about a young assassin who finds his loyalties tested when the girl he loves becomes the next target. Expected Release: Future

  1. The Hero in Black

The newest addition to the list, and I couldn’t be more excited about this story idea! The entire story literally hit me all at once and by the end of a single weekend I had plotted out the story and constructed much of the fictional world. Don’t want to give anything away yet, but stay tuned. Can’t wait to get rolling on this. Expected Release: Future

Well, there you have it! Lots of words on pages in 2015. I had a blast exploring new story ideas and stretching myself with new styles and narrative techniques (multiple POV’s, first-person narration, non-fantasy genre etc.). That being said, my goal for 2016 is to clean up the mess I’ve created. No more new stories allowed! I’m going to force myself to complete all that’s on my plate already before going for dessert. I’ll keep you all posted on my progress as I go, so keep checking back.

Thanks again for all of you who have supported me and enjoyed my books. I love getting messages from people discovering my novels for the first time. Remember, if you enjoy the books then make sure to let your friends know about them and drop a review on Amazon/Goodreads. Good friends don’t let friends miss out on good books! 🙂 You all rock! 2016 is here. Let the fun begin…now!
